fall watercolor craft for kids

It’s Fall and the leaves are starting to change beautiful colors where we live so today I’m sharing a fun and easy craft you’ll enjoy doing with the kids. I volunteered in my son’s class last week and they were making this leaf project using crayon and watercolors. They turned out super cute!

Here are the shapes you’ll need. Just print out the image found here on a heavy paper or cardstock and cut them out.

For this craft, you’ll need:

  • Crayons
  • White paper
  • Watercolor paint and brush
  • Scissors
  • Leaf shapes from above in a thick paper or cardstock

Directions:

  1. Place your first shape on the paper and with heavy short strokes color around the edges in crayon.
  2. Place your second leaf and repeat the process in a different color making sure not to overlap the first leaf. Repeat the same process without overlapping the first or second leaf.
  3. Using the same color as each leaf paint the inside of leaves with corresponding water colors.
  4. Paint the background in a different shade than the leaves and let dry.

The crayon sort of creates a barrier for the paint so it’s really easy for kids to do on their own without help.

They LOVED doing this project. It’s so therapeutic to just sit, relax and get creative for a moment with the kiddos. I hope you can use this idea with your little ones either at home or even in class. This would be a great Fall party craft for school!

use the free photo papers from staples.. they are very good for using it with water color paint.. Why wasting them..

It says NOT to overlap, but they all look overlapped in the pictures?

I think she means you can overlap them but when you lay the second leaf on top not to trace over the first one. That’s how I took it anyways.

That’s really pretty. I cant wait to try it on Thanksgiving vacation with the kids!
